Re:A coeliac diet is really healthier than a normal diet
  Twila on 2012-05-07
My 6 year old daughter spent most of her life with tummy aches that were unexplained. A few people suggested that I remove gluten from her diet and it has really made a difference. Unfortunately not everything on the market warns of possible gluten containing products. I learned this when calling general mills to find out if kix contained gluten. The lady told me that items such as malt and flavors are not required to be listed. She also warned that oats unless exclusively stating that they are gluten free have a high rate of cross contamination. if you do not have other allergies to foods such as eggs or dairy it is not too terribly hard to learn to bake your own bread. I took my favorite brownie and banana recipes and tweaked them to make a rather tasty loaf of bread. The biggest catch is making the loves SMALL so that the middle gets cooked. For larger loaves I cook for 30 minutes uncovered and then cover with foil for an additional 20 min. The recipe I developed is as follows:

IT IS IMPORTANT TO FIRST MIX ET AND DRY INGREDIENTS SEPARATELY AND THOROUGHLY >>> I RECOMMEND SIFTING THE DRY INGREDIENTS

1 cup rice flour

1/2 cup your choice (soy, sorghum, quinoa, mesquite, teff ) flour

1/2 cup amaranth flour

1/2 cup flax seed (ground)

1/2 tablespoon xanth or guar gum

1 tablespoon starch (corn, arrowroot, tapioca)

1 teaspoon salt

4 eggs

1/2 cup buttermilk

1/2 cup (melted and cooled butter or vegetable oil)

1/2 cup syrup ( I use either corn syrup or a molasses corn syrup blend)

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and blend well

Let sit while warming the oven to 350 and lightly spraying loaf pans with oil

Gently roll the mix into prepared pan(s)... I use my spatula to gently shape the dough like you would a meatloaf.

This recipe is easily adjusted... Soy flour will darken quicker than other flours and I often replace it with sorghum, tapioca or arrowroot and omit the additional starch.

I hope this helps. Most deserts like brownies and cookies are easy to sub gluten free flours for reg flour. Just remember to add about 1/2 tablespoon xanth or guar gum to the flour mixture for every 2 cups of gluten free flour. Sorghum is my favorite substitute and I almost always use 1/2 - 1 cup rice flour in my mixes.

if using mini loaf pans cooking will take less time

I just read your post (I do not even know how long ago you posted) but I am curious to know if you found answers to your questions as my situation seems very similar? I am just starting to try to figure out what has been going on. I recently tried a gluten-free diet (mostly - I'm not being 100\% strict in terms of food that may have trace amounts of gluten). I also recently realized that my small finger joint is swollen and an internet search pointed to grout. I am looking for a doctor like you said, who can look at a variety of symptoms and figure out both possible causes and relationships between various issues. I have no idea what type of doctor to even look for?! Any advice would be appreciated

 Gluten-free Dairy-free and Soya-free recipes
  on 2012-03-29
Gluten free plus soy free plus dairy free is not uncommon. Corn free as well is unusual. Sugar in the diet cannot be avoided - and there are several different sorts of sugar - but you can avoid adding extra sugar.

So the first question I would ask is what is the basis of the diagnosis?

You can bake with eggs, rice flour, sorghum, gram, potato, sticky rice flour, tapioca flour, chestnut flour, sago flour, various oils - I use olive oil for baking. You could use lard.
Other useful ingredients: ground almonds, cocoa powder ( not chocolate) , coconut flour / cream.

I tend to eat very little baked food. breakfast is freshly cooked rice with fruit. Lunch rice or baked potato with vegetables, supper - main meal, meat or fish, potato, variety of vegetables.

Hope that is useful

Peter

I see that you have posted a lot of info so I wondered if you might be able to help me too. I'm supposed to be gluten free, corn free, soy free, dairy free, sugar and all sweeteners except stevia free, peanut free, yeast free, and more. I'm currently trying to make or find recipes to bake such as breads, cakes, cookies, etc. that will fit into these restrictions. Is there any chance you can lead me to some help.

I too have found that I have flare-ups in my stomach when I've eaten something with barley malt syrup in it: pale ale, and Nairn's oat biscuits both cause this. Barley does contain gluten, but you may be right that the barley malt is not pure, and it contains wheat aswell. Note: when barley and oats are grown wheat grains can get mixed up with the crop of course, so no grain is pure unless grown in specially protected way

Have a 3 year old daughter who seems to have many issues. She has had 2a inguinal repairs (before age 2) she has NEVER slept all night. She wakes screaming several times a night drenched in sweat. Complains about her tummy often and will barely eat anything. Dr. Says no worries, probably night terrors. After 2it yrs of reading everything: night terrors are periodic, not every night. Sweating is not normal. I found sites between night terrors/sweating and celiac, avoiding foods, stomach h problems, behavioral problems... list goes on

 Re: rash on my face
  CRB on 2012-02-12
For your case (inhalers) it is more than likely caused by your inhalers. They are more than likely a steroid type inhalant.... steroid cream, inhalants, etc are known to cause what is called perioral dermatitis which is a rash on skin around your mouth and can be around your eyes too called periorificial dermatits. It is unknown why it causes this. Anyone that has used hydrocortisone on your face (or anywhere and touched your face without washing hands it can cause this perioral dermatitis. From what I've researched it is very hard to heal and it can reoccur later on after all symptoms are gone. I've noticed with my son (who has never been exposed to any type of steroid creams or inhalants but has an awful chin rash like this and around his nose and getting at his eyes too) that drs (at least his) are prescribing steroid creams for the face which are not supposed to be put on the face! It must not be very well known about and I am alsO getting very frustrated about nobody knowing what this is! Hope this helps! May try putting some type of skin barrier on face befOre using inhaler

Again, check each flavour. I have just been diagnosed as allergic to wheat and thus gluten, and I was/am addicted to salt and vinegar crisps. All varieties seem to include gluten, even Tyrrells and Kettle Chips. I conclude it must be to do with the vinegar being "malt". I am very disappointed! But, on the Kettle Chips website the sour cream and oniion and mature cheddar flavours are labelled at gluten free. So I guess it's time to open up to new flavours

I agree with you completely, I will not take any gluten just to prove the doctors right or wrong. I went to see a private consultant endocrinologist and he asked me if I had already been tested by biopsy....I told him no as gluten makes me so ill that I had refused to take the test. He agreed that I should not do it just to be labelled, and that he would certify me as celiac if necessary without the biopsy

Have you had your thyroid tested? You could have problems with it and its worth looking into. The problem with the Cambridge and similar diets is that its low calorie and so far removed from normal food that you will put the weight back on when you come off the diet. A healthy eating plan would be much better with a reasonable number of calories. The Atkins diet might be worth looking at or even better the Paleo diet as it is based on food like meat, fish, veg and fruit that are naturally gluten free. The fats in it are beneficial to thyroid function if they are healthy fats

Chex makes a number of GF cereals if you don't want to buy the expensive GF ones.

Most Natural corn chips are safe, read the ingredients. Stay away from hydrogenated oils...must be pure canola or olive oils.

Salsa is safe w/o corn syrup. I do not eat any corn syrup, High fructose or not. Many are processed with wheat or malt for stability.

Do not buy processed meats. Even chicken in a brine is not safe, the brine may contain stock which has flour. Buy fresh, read the package. There are GF hams, bacon, salami, etc.

Read, read, read the labels. Products change ingredients all the time, so don't assume if it was one safe, it still is.

Some cheese like blue cheese contains wheat.

Unfortunately not all foods labeled GF are safe, some manufactures, mis- label food. Be sure to know what you are buying.

Good luck, happy and healthy eating

CONCLUSIONS: Although coeliac disease may only account for a small proportion of diarrhoeal mortality, these deaths are not preventable by applying normal diarrhoea treatment guidelines, which may even involve gluten-based food supplements. As other causes of diarrhoeal mortality decline, coeliac disease will become a proportionately increasing problem unless consideration is given to trying gluten-free diets for children with chronic diarrhoea and malnutrition."

Sorbitol can cause intestinal discomfort in children and sometimes in adults.

In children it can be from drinking too much fruit juice.

Sorbitol is an indigestible sugar.

Sorbitol is found in a lot of manufactured foods, and in some fruit juice and some fruit.

Prune juice and prunes have the highest amount, with less in pears, sweet cherry, peach and apple.

Strawberry, raspeberry, pineapple and citrus fruit such as oranges are free of sorbitol

I don't think that there is any doubt that some cases of ulcerative colitis are caused by gluten or wheat in the diet.
But it is not the only cause.
People who react to gluten or wheat also seem to have a higher rate of adverse reactions to other foods as well.
So ulcerative colitis might be cause by other foods you are eating even though you are on a gluten-free diet.
Try and eat as varied a diet as possible, keep processed foods to the minimum, keep a diary of what you eat and any symptoms, and you might be able to spot a connection

I was diagnosed with UC 17 years ago and has been on Asacol for a out 16 years until I started a GF diet. It has eliminated my UC symptoms and has improved my condition! My doctor still believes I do have UC but with the help of GF diet, it is well controlled until I eat gluten or dairy which seems to go hand in hand. I have had a few flare ups due to eating gluten and dairy and the only way together back to norm is taking my UC meds. I would then wean off once symptoms are gone. Since I seem to flare easily because of party foods and eating at restaurants. Flare ups have been very often. Now I just take 4 tabs of Asacol instead of 12 for maintenance, otherwise I have no wiggle room. I buy some of my snacks from Trader Joes or Whole Foods. I drink soy milk with Chex GF cereal for breakfast. Costco also has a variety of GF chips. It's not as hard as you think. It forces you to eat better! Good luck. Your condition WILL improve with this diet and dairy free as well.

So far I haven't noticed any difference, but I also currently have a flare-up of severe pouchitis that my dr just gave me an antibiotic for.

My question is to anyone who has a j-pouch, how normal can i expect my bm's to get if this diet works and food is the culprit. Can I expect to return to normal bm's like I had before I developed UC? Any idea how long I need to give this diet to tell if it is going to work? I've heard anything from 3 weeks to 3 months.

Thank you in advance for any advise you can give me

Hi there, not sure when you posted this but I have a 2yr old who was not growing, and would be sick all the time. I took her to the doctor's which refered me to a pediatrician. We had every test under the sun and finally he sent her to get a blood test that showed her IGA levels off and low iron and then he sent her for another blood test to see if she had celiac disease and it came back normal?? After a month of her throwing up we decided to put her on a completely Gluten Free diet and what a change. If she has any gluten she is sick after. I know it's not your child but doctor's are not perfect (I had similar symptoms for 30 yrs and diagnosed myself with a gluten intollerence after haveing 2 doctor's opinions and countless tests). I read that the blood tests for children under 2 are not alway's accurate for wheat intollerence. Use your judgment you know best how your child feels and be very pushy with physicians until they can give you an answer. My pediatrician could not figure out why she was sick all the time and just washed his hands of us ???

Good luck Sancia

Wow!!! It is definitely no coincidence that I found this forum!! I think of it as Godincidence! My 14-yr old daughter was diagnosed with UC when she was 9 yrs old. After being on meds which we tapered off of over the course of four years, then down to nothing, she had a flare up about 7 months ago that landed her in the hospital three times since. It got so bad this January that she was hospitalized for 11 days with "treatments" that included: oral meds (anti-inflammatory), IV meds (sterroids and antibiotics), medicated enemas, a blood transfusion-due to severe low blood count, a pic line to receive nutrition, a low-residue diet. She was so weak, dehydrated and practically lifeless (except for her bowel) that she needed a bedside commode. After realizing the meds were not working, she had a colonoscopy and EGD only to discover the severity would require Remicade treatments every two months for about a year or removal of the affected area of the colon. What do you think we chose? The treatments of course!! To say the least, I am happy the treatment seems to be effective, but my mind (as her mother--not her doctor) never rests...I worry about the possible side effects of all this and will not rest until I have more answers.

Now, with all that being said, in the course of all of this and through much prayer, I have been researching natural remedies, including better (greener) supplements and vitamins and minerals. I have had numerous friends encourage me to look into the whole "gluten-free" diet and try it. But with all the chaos of her illness and so many people offering their advice--some who have no idea--we have been trying to get her to a "stable" point so we can think clearly about all of it. I have recently taken her to a homeopath (also an RN) who suggested the gluten-free diet and better nutritional supplements. After reading all of your posts, you have convinced me that it is definitely worth a shot--to give her her life back!!

Since most doctors are not suggesting this themselves, they have no idea! I truly had no idea and was skeptical until I came upon this forum and found the "clinical" results you all posted to be ultimately promising!!! We should all print (if this is legal) the comments (your clinical results) and hand a copy over to doctors overseeing our care. They need to hear (read) all of the positive results from so many for them to get on board with this!!! This cumulative review of so many people, from many walks of life, from different countries and various associated illnesses should raise their eyebrows and open their minds for sure!!!

I just want to say thanks to all of you for sharing your problems, your concerns and your encouragement. Please pray that I can help my daughter make this diet transition go smoothly for her. I can't wait to let her read this forum; I cannot say thank you enough! Keep spreading the word about your successes!! Best of luck to you

I too have been plagued by this rash for months, and after some research of my own, figured it out. It's called perioral dermatitis (Google it). Of course it's one of those weird unexplainable things that women get for no reason. Stop any steroid cream you may be using, change all your facial products, and even the toothpaste/mouth wash you use. Tetracycline (antibiotic) is also recommended. It can recur though, even after all this. Good luck

A few hot lunch ideas that have worked well for my picky GF eater are

GF hot dogs: pre heat a thermos by filling it with boiling water, then empty it and add more boiling water before adding the hot dogs and sealing it. Preheating it will keep them warm longer. Put some cheese in a baggie, and toss a few condiment packages in as well. If your picky eater will eat GF hot dog buns, add those. If not the hot dogs are great to munch on without a bun too.

GF Chili: There are a few brands of GF chili available but my family makes our own. Again, preheat the thermos and add heated chili to it. I still recommend the cheese on the side to keep it from getting rubbery and gross.

Soups and Stews: Chicken and rice is a family favorite for us. We tend to make our own soups for the most variety and it allows for flexibility for our picky eaters as well as our GF members of the family. Beef stew is also a winner, particularly with rice to give it a bit of body.

GF pizza bites are a huge hit also. One of the biggest issues for my GF eaters is wanting to fit in. Totino's pizza rolls are all the rage in elementary school, and they can easily be made GF at home.

Ingredients

2 pounds finely minced pepperoni (we recommend chopping in a food processor)

1 medium green pepper, finely minced

3/4 cup mozzarella cheese

1/2 c green onions, finely minced

2 (14 ounce) jars pizza sauce

1 recipe Vegan Wonton Wrappers ,enough to make 32 2″ egg roll wraps

oil (for frying)

Instructions

Combine above ingredients except wrappers (and oil).

Place egg roll wrappers on the table in front of you. Working quickly, place a teaspoon of filling in center of each egg roll and moisten all sides with a little water.

Fold the wrapper in half, lengthwise, so that you have formed a filled rectangle. Press lightly to seal.

Pizza rolls may be frozen at this point.

To cook, fry in 1” of 375º oil for 1-2 minutes til golden brown. Alternately, you can bake these at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until browned and crisp.

Serve with addition pizza sauce for dipping, if desired.

Best of luck

Hi

I was diagnosed with irritable bowl when i was 18 and ive always felt ill, plus have sarcoid.

I started to get a rash down both of my sides and no where else, i read eaten GF foods helps the pain in joints for people with sarcoid and also helps IBS suffers and the obvious Celiac sufferers.

Ive been GF now for just over 4 weeks and really feel the difference, even people have commented on how much staighter i am walking nad how healthier i look.

I have found sainsbury's from a main shop not the small ones have a lot of things GF free - it is expensive and ive heard if you are diagnosed form doctor you can get prescription food.

The flour in sainsburys makes the best pancakes ever and they have some lovely GF red, brown source, ice cream, bread, Also try crimbles coconut and chocolate bisciutes are lovely for a treat just as nice as normal biscuits, they also do a lovely chocolate pudding. Other than than i cook with pure olive oil, use butter, fresh meat and veg -

I hope this is helpfull xx

Hi

Im reply to you as i notice that you put in your letter that a blood test was shown to be negative but you are having the endoscopy to see if it coeliac or not, my son is 6 and has it, but for it to show up on the test you shouldnt cut out the wheat or gluten until it has been diagnosed as this will show up to be a negative result> Coeliac is when the tiny hair folicales in the intestine disappears so anything eaten is past straight through, if you start giving your child a gluten free diet before the test, any folicales that had gone will have time to repair itself which will then give you a negative result on the test, so please i know its hard to see your child suffer, but to get the right result you still need to give them the wheat and gluten. I hope this has been of use to you

This is always a difficult question to answer.
Some people will try a gluten-free diet, and if they improve on the diet will stick to that whatever the outcome of further tests.
However, the best diagnosis is made on your condition if you do not change your diet, and a diagnosis can be made more difficult for anyone who has been on a gluten-free diet for some time.
There is also a small element of risk in starting a gluten-free diet and then returning to eat gluten, as symptoms can be made a lot worse.
So with relatively mild symptoms, keeping to your previous diet will aid diagnosis and is unlikely to make your condition worse in the short term

Hi

I hope you can offer some advice to me. I had the results of my blood tests this morning showing that coeliac disease was a possible cause of my recent tummy troubles and I have been referred on to a gastroenterologist. The consultation appointment is three weeks away and may necessitate an endoscopy and biopsy. I am happy to try a gluten free diet whilst waiting for this referral but from various threads I have read today, I am not sure whether this is the right thing to do. Should I carry on eating normally, including gluten in my diet? Or should I cut it out so I can tell the consultant that it has helped? Will a diagnosis be affected by my diet or is it a condition that can be proven through the procedures? Although my symptoms have not been pleasant I would not describe them as debilitating so could tolerate continuing with the gluten if necessary.

Thanks in anticipation of your help.

Nicola

I have been putting it in a round loaf and rising it. I wonder if others have had this problem. It also doesn't say the temp. in the oven to bake it on. Any thoughts? I also saw a post to needing an egg substitute and I use 1 Tlb. of ground flax to 3 Tlb. water. I let it sit for 5 min. or so and the consistency become much like an egg. I have had the best luck with freshly ground flax, not the Bob's Red Mill already ground

It may not be quite as effective as amioderone but most of the side effects have been eliminated. My afib has recently progressed to be persistent w/o a cardioversion. Can't yet say if the multaq is helping me or not.

Highly touted heart drug Multaq not as good as generics, cardiologists say [Updated]
April 5, 2010 | 3:39 pm
Dronedarone, a highly touted drug targeted at atrial fibrillation and sold under the brand name Multaq, is only half as effective as the generic drug amiodarone and does not appear to have fewer side effects, researchers from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center reported Monday. It should be used only as a second- or third-line drug if all others fail, the team reported in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The report, which is based on an examination of existing clinical trials rather than new research, represents further bad news for what was once thought to be a potential blockbuster drug with billions of dollars of annual sales.

(we even eat meats that are raised grain free) We were told that he has intollereances that he may grow out of after four. When we were tested all of the above came back normal. My response is intended to say that there may be more than just gluten and the gluten (because your child is so young) could be just an intollerance and even if doesnt test positive for it could still be a big problem and may need to continue to aviod

This is exactly what I was hoping to read. I know I suffer from candida and am on a treatment for it at the moment. But whilst im on it, have developed a rash on both sides of my chin that itch and a little around my nose.

It drives me crazy. Make-up can cover it but when my face is naked it looks terrible.

Im hoping once the candida treatment has finished that my skin will stay clear. For now, I find that betnovate eases the itching and does take the redness down.

You only need a tiny bit too.

No sugar, wheat dairy or yeast for 6 weeks along with an antifungal tablet and acidophilus.

Also cut out anything that can turn into sugar. ie, alcohol. No fruit, nothing with vinegars and lots and lots of green veg.

Your symptoms do seem to be quite a severe allergic reaction. Even if this is not a coeliac case, you still need urgent medical advice on how to tackle this problem.

There are cases in the literature where all the symptoms that you describe are caused by a reaction to wheat gluten, and clear up completely on a gluten-free diet. However this syndrome is very uncommon. Please do update this thread when you have results to report. Thanks

I have been gluten free (not strictly ) for about a year. Happened across a book which said that symptoms could be from gluten intolerance. Currently I am waiting on a biopsy in 6 weeks to check for celiac. I have been eating gluten for about a week in prep for this test.

My joints in hands are sore and quite swollen. Certain times of the day I seem to have a hypoglycemic reaction and I need to take milk. I just ate bread about 1.5hr ago, with tuna and tomato and now I am getting tingly face, numbness, speech slurr, and dizzy, where if I dont have small glass of milk I will go into a passed out type state, but am still awake and aware what is going on but cant move. It is quite extreme and will seem to happen daily. This seems to stop when I am gluten free?

The joint pain which is a lot in my fingers, but also in general, the body feels general ache and pain as well. I am unsure what I will do if the biopsy comes back negative, but may go to a dietician to help me try gluten free diet strictly to see what happens.

My questions are: will the joint pain go away if on strict gluten free (if I am intolerant), has anyone else had this hypoglycemic reaction? (someone has commented that they go tingly and numb in their arms and legs. I get this also, which I feel like I am going paralysed. I have collapsed at work at times and had to get taken to hospital in ambulance. Hoping to answers soon

So back to square one, with the weight piling on again. I've been tempted to try different diets - lost loads of weight on Cambridge - but when I came off, back came the weight! Have run out of ideas as am eating less, eating healthily and trying to keep my blood sugar level up as I suffer from low sugar levels (and low blood pressure). Hello Mel and April -

I just read your post in regard to your 6 year old daughters facial rash. I have a 6 year old daughter suffering with a chronic red face that comes and goes but recently is pretty much at the chronic stage and has not cleared 100\% in a few weeks. My daughter also suffers all over body itching every night. I attribute it to a drop in natural cortisol levels and that her body is just done by 9pm at night,

I would love to talk to you more to find out what exactly your daughter is going/has gone through. I feel quite lost as we keep getting a diagnosis of "contact dermatitis", at least 2 allergist think her problem is all chemical and I am just not sure although I do think she has some degree of contact dermatitis.

She has recently started to complain more of stomach pain and has increased diarrhea. I just started keeping a strict food & symptom diary. I am thinking it's possible she has some celiac signs but I am also wondering about milk/dairy as well.

She had a postive test to peanuts, treenuts & sesame last year. After we stopped nuts, her eczema which she suffered with since 1 year old was GONE. We still see some eczema flares to her legs and elbows/hands from time to time but its very under control now.

Recently, she has tested allergic to almost every food we have tested her for....several fruits and vegetable, potatoes, rice...pretty much everything. An allergist recently told us those tests are pretty inconclusive as she is reacting to everything on blood test.

Any info you could share would be much appreciated. I am very frustrated and stressed with this whole mess.

Please contact me asap.

Thank You!
Lisa

 Re: Millet Bread Recipe
  Lisa on 2010-12-28
Susan, I frequently buy the deland bakery oat bread and have had no issue with sickness.... as has my brother and his friend and we are all celiac. The cross contamination is from the millet. The facility (which I have visited) is NOT a gluten free facility, however, they try very hard not to contaminate their products. They do not use wheat at all. The millet bread (in all forms) made me ill... but the oat bread did not.

The reason they say may contain wheat is specifically because of cross contamination. I am not sure what oat products they use, but I am pretty sure it is a gluten free or at least gluten sensitive friendly brand (like bob's redmill perhaps)

The facility is in a natural store on 1792 in deland. I would run by there if you don't live too far away.

Home Scientific documents Opinion of the Scientific Panel on Dieteti...Print Opinion of the Scientific Panel on Dietetic products, nutrition and allergies [NDA] related to a notification from SOFRALAB on hydrolysed wheat gluten used as fining agent in wines pursuant to Article 6 Paragraph 11 of Directive 2000/13/EC
Question number: EFSA-Q-2004-138

Adopted: 2 December 2004

Summary (0.1 Mb)

Opinion (0.2 Mb)

Summary

The applicant provides information on the characteristics of hydrolysed wheat gluten and describes its use in the fining process of wines and musts. Laboratory data on residual levels and immunoreactivity of hydrolysed wheat gluten in treated wines and musts are also presented. It is stated that wines clarified with hydrolysed and non-hydrolysed wheat gluten do not represent any risk when consumed by coeliac patients and subjects allergic to wheat gluten. This statement is based on the applicant’s interpretation of the results of in vitro studies, with emphasis on an ad hoc developed SDS-PAGE immunoblot method. The applicant plans to test wines in vitro for allergenic potential at various conditions and in all vinification stages. A clinical study with wheat allergic subjects will be considered only in case of ambiguous results of the laboratory studies.

Clinical reactions to wheat isolates in food have been reported. Wines and musts treated with hydrolysed wheat gluten may contain low levels of allergenic proteins and peptides. However, the analytical data provided by the applicant are insufficient to determine the residual levels of gluten proteins and peptides in wines. It is not known at which levels of intake hydrolysed wheat gluten would cause allergic reactions in cereal allergic individuals. The scientific data provided by the applicant are insufficient to predict the likelihood of adverse reactions in cereal allergic individuals. Nevertheless, taking into account the levels of wheat proteins reported to cause allergic reactions in severely allergic individuals, the Panel considers that wines and musts treated with hydrolysed wheat gluten could trigger an allergic reaction. Clinical information and improved analytical data are needed with regard to the effects of wines and musts treated with hydrolysed wheat gluten in cereal allergic individuals. Appropriate clinical studies applying best clinical and laboratory practice should be carried out.

For coeliac disease, assessment of the provided evidence indicates that wines and musts treated with hydrolysed wheat gluten are unlikely to cause an adverse reaction in individuals with coeliac disease provided that the provisional value of gluten considered by Codex Alimentarius for foods rendered gluten-free (currently 200 mg/kg) is not exceeded.
